How Can severe Sore Throat Along With Ear Pain Be Treated?

Hi, I have a long term sore throat, with ear pain and hoarse voice. I ve been to an ENT who diagnosed chronic tonsilities, chronic laryngitis and muscular tension dysphonia. He gave me two options to decide from - tonsil surgery and/or voice therapy. I m unclear which would be the better option to relieve the symptoms.

Hello,

Thank you for your query. I understand your concerns.

From what you have written, the chronic tonsillitis and chronic laryngitis is likely to be contributing to your symptoms of sore throat and ear ache. (Pain in the throat can be referred to the ears causing ear pain; this is because the nerves supplying the throat and the ears are the same).
So, if you could have the tonsillectomy, these symptoms may possibly settle down.

Voice therapy alone may not help in relieving the sore throat. Voice therapy may help with the hoarse voice though. But again hoarseness of voice could be due to the laryngitis/tonsillitis in which case having your tonsils removed would be beneficial.

Further Voice therapy can also be done after your tonsillectomy if your symptoms still persist.

So, I think you may benefit with a tonsillectomy first.

Try to seek a second opinion from an ENT surgeon first before making the final decision.

I wish you good health.

I hope this answer has been helpful to you.
